garden update

I've tried a few new things this spring.  I grew carrots, potatoes, and strawberries.
I feel like every year I should try something new.
I grew the carrots from seed and the potatoes from little potatoes I bought at the plant store.  Apparently, you cant just grow potatoes from the ones you buy in the grocery store because they've been treated.  I actually came home with a little net bag of small potatoes.  I followed the instructions for allowing the "eyes" to sprout and then cut them up and planted the pieces.  A plant grew from each piece and then the root s of that plant formed more potatoes!  It was awesome!  One thing I will do differently next year is to mound the dirt around the plant so that I can harvest the pots without disturbing the actual plant.

The carrots went well.  My first crop, I planted seeds way too close together so some of them were a little deformed.  My second crop was way better.  I had so many carrots I've  frozen a bag for winter enjoyment

The strawberry plants have not been great producers.  I will plant more plants next year.  This year I only put in three because I was worried I wouldn't know what I was doing.  I really cant afford to be wasting money on plants so I buy a few guinea pigs before I commit.  Also, something seems to be eating the fruit that does appear.  I'm not sure if it's bugs, the dog, or something else.....I keep finding strawberries with bites taken out.  These were picked May 1.
