Do you really understand what it takes to teach a person with a learning disability?
Are you aware that laws created in 2001 now demand that students with learning disabilities are mixed with other typical students in a classroom setting?
Today, I pretty much ignored one of my classes to focus on ONE child. He is failing my ceramics class and wont do any written work. Come to find out that the kid has a learning disability. With my very focused attention today, he was able to concentrate and complete several written assignments. All of these assignments were previously completed by the rest of the class via lecture and note taking. His disability prevents him from doing this by himself.
As this is happening, I think of other classrooms, both in my school and across the country, of learning disabled students integrated with non learning disabled. The amount of time and attention devoted to the LD students is phenomenal.
It requires a teacher really really on top of her game to deal with them and in addition keep the more advanced students engaged and learning. Can it be done successfully?
More importantly, knowing what teachers have to face, would I put my child in public school?
